The Ammo Mix-Up Chart: What Chambers, What Doesn't, and What Blows Up
Your range buddy eyeballs your ammo can, squints at the headstamp, and says "close enough." Sometimes he's right. Sometimes he's about to make a $1,200 mistake that also involves an ambulance.
This guide covers every common ammo mix-up in three tiers: combinations that are safe by design, combinations that work by luck until they don't, and combinations that will destroy your gun and possibly you. Bookmark this page. Send it to the guy at the range who keeps borrowing your magazines.

Tier 1 — Safe by Design
These combinations were intentionally engineered to work. Manufacturers designed the larger/stronger chamber to safely accept the shorter or lower-pressure cartridge.
Engineered Compatibility
- .223 Remington → 5.56 NATO chamber Safe
The 5.56 chamber has a longer leade (throat). .223's lower pressure is well within the 5.56 chamber's tolerances. This is the most common "safe" swap in the shooting world. - .38 Special → .357 Magnum revolver Safe
The .357 Magnum was designed as an elongated .38 Special. Every .357 revolver is built to chamber both. Shooting .38 in a .357 is actually preferred for practice — less recoil, less cost, less barrel wear. - .44 Special → .44 Magnum revolver Safe
Same relationship as .38/.357. The .44 Magnum is a lengthened .44 Special. All .44 Mag revolvers chamber .44 Special safely. - 7.62x51 NATO → .308 Winchester chamber Safe
NATO spec is loaded to slightly lower pressure than commercial .308. It's always safe to fire 7.62x51 in a .308 chamber. The reverse direction is the one with caveats (see Tier 2). - 2.75" shotshells → 3" or 3.5" shotgun chamber Safe
Shorter shells fire safely in longer chambers. A 3.5" 12ga chamber accepts 2.75" and 3" shells. Just don't go the other direction — a 3" shell in a 2.75" chamber can't unfold its crimp properly. - .22 Short / .22 Long → .22 LR chamber Safe
A .22 LR chamber accepts all shorter .22 rimfire variants. Semi-autos won't cycle reliably with .22 Short, but revolvers and single-shots work fine.
Tier 2 — Works Until It Doesn't
These combinations function in many guns, most of the time. But "most of the time" is not a safety standard. Each one involves a pressure, headspace, or dimensional gamble.
Pressure & Headspace Gambling
- 5.56 NATO → .223 Remington chamber Overpressure Risk
This is the dangerous direction of the .223/5.56 relationship. The .223 chamber has a shorter leade, which spikes pressure when firing hotter 5.56 ammo. Most modern .223 rifles handle it fine, but older guns with tight chambers can experience primer blowout, stuck cases, or cracked bolts. The pressure difference is roughly 4,000 PSI — not trivial. - .308 Winchester → 7.62x51 NATO chamber Usually Fine
Most shooters interchange these without issue, and most of the time it's safe. But commercial .308 loads can be loaded hotter than NATO spec allows. Milspec chambers may have tighter headspace. High-performance .308 hunting loads in a surplus military rifle are the highest-risk combination. Standard FMJ range loads are generally fine. - .40 S&W → 10mm Auto chamber Headspace Lottery
The .40 S&W was literally created by shortening the 10mm case. It physically fits in a 10mm chamber but headspaces on the extractor rather than the case mouth — the extractor claw is the only thing holding the cartridge in position. Some guns fire .40 in a 10mm chamber for years without incident. Others experience split cases, erratic ignition, and keyholing. Don't do it on purpose. - .22 LR → .22 WMR (Magnum) chamber Will Fire, Will Fail
The .22 WMR case is slightly wider than .22 LR. A .22 LR round will drop into a WMR chamber and fire, but the undersized case can't seal the chamber properly — expanding gases escape around the case, splitting it. Accuracy is nonexistent. Case fragments can damage the gun. One of the sneakiest mix-ups because the rounds look almost identical.
The Common Thread in Tier 2
Every Tier 2 combination shares the same failure mode: it works reliably enough that people start treating it as normal. Then one hot load, one tight chamber, or one fatigued case turns "usually fine" into "catastrophic." Don't build a habit around any of these.
Tier 3 — Catastrophic. Will Destroy the Gun and Possibly You.
These are not theoretical risks. Every combination below has caused documented injuries or deaths. There is no safe way to do any of these.
Barrel Obstructions & Explosive Failures
- .300 Blackout → 5.56 NATO / .223 AR-15 CATASTROPHIC
The single most dangerous common ammo mix-up in modern shooting. See the dedicated section below. - 20 gauge shell → 12 gauge shotgun CATASTROPHIC
A 20ga hull (diameter: 0.615") slides past a 12ga chamber (0.729") and lodges in the forcing cone. The shooter doesn't realize it — the bore looks empty. They chamber a 12ga shell behind it and fire. The barrel is now obstructed. The result is a split barrel, shattered receiver, and potential hand/face injuries. This is why 20ga shells are dyed bright yellow — color-code your ammo storage. - 9mm Luger → .40 S&W chamber Case Blowout
The 9mm round (9.01mm) is narrower than the .40 S&W chamber (10.2mm). The 9mm can drop in and fire, but the case has zero chamber support — the walls expand unsupported, the case ruptures, and high-pressure gas vents into the action. Cracked frames and injured hands result. - .357 Magnum → .38 Special revolver Overpressure Failure
The .357 Mag is too long to chamber in a .38 Special cylinder — but if the cylinder has been modified, reamed, or is worn enough to accept one, the .38 Special frame cannot handle .357 Magnum pressures (35,000 PSI vs 17,500 PSI). Frame cracking, cylinder gap blowout, or barrel separation can result.
The .300 Blackout Problem: Why This Mix-Up Kills People
This Has Caused Deaths
The .300 Blackout / 5.56 mix-up is responsible for documented fatalities and severe injuries. This is not a hypothetical risk. If you own both calibers, read this section completely.
Here's why .300 Blackout is uniquely dangerous in a 5.56 rifle:
Same parent case. The .300 BLK uses a necked-up 5.56/.223 case. The case head diameter is identical (0.378"). A .300 BLK round slides into a 5.56 magazine. It feeds from that magazine into the chamber. The bolt closes. The primer is struck. Everything feels normal to the shooter.
The bullet doesn't fit the barrel. The .300 BLK fires a .308-caliber bullet (7.82mm). The 5.56 barrel bore is .224 caliber (5.70mm). The bullet physically cannot pass through the barrel. It lodges at the chamber throat.
55,000 PSI with nowhere to go. The powder charge detonates. Full chamber pressure builds against an immovable obstruction. The barrel, upper receiver, and bolt carrier absorb the force they were never designed for. The upper receiver typically splits. Fragments travel backward toward the shooter's face and hands, and laterally toward anyone standing nearby.
How to Prevent It
The solution isn't complicated, but it requires discipline:
Never store .300 BLK and 5.56 loose in the same container. Color-code your magazines — a wrap of orange tape on .300 BLK magazines is the most common convention. Load .300 BLK magazines in a different room or at a different time than 5.56. If you shoot both calibers in one range session, physically separate the ammunition and magazines on the bench. After loading, visually confirm the projectile profile before inserting the magazine — the .300 BLK's wider, heavier bullet is visually obvious when you're looking for it.
If you ever feel uncertain about a round, pull it out and check. The three seconds of inconvenience could save your life.
Same Number, Different Planet
The firearms industry reuses caliber numbers like a landlord reuses apartment paint. These cartridges share a number but have zero interchangeability.
Every "7.62" That Exists
All nominally 7.62mm (.30 caliber). None interchangeable. Four completely different cartridges.
Every "9mm" That Exists
All nominally 9mm. Only 9mm Luger is what most people mean when they say "9mm."
The .22 Family Tree
Everything from a plinking round to a varmint cartridge. All ".22 caliber." Zero interchangeability outside the rimfire ladder.
The lesson: caliber numbers are marketing, not specifications. Always match the exact cartridge name stamped on your barrel to the exact cartridge name stamped on the box. "Close enough" is never close enough.
Five Rules That Prevent Every Mix-Up
The Short Version
1. Read your barrel marking. Match it exactly to the box. Every time.
2. Never store different calibers loose in the same container.
3. Color-code magazines when you own similar-parent calibers (.300 BLK / 5.56).
4. If a round chambers with unusual resistance, stop. Extract and inspect.
5. At shared ranges, don't use other people's ammunition unless you've personally verified the headstamp.
The best ammunition in the world is worthless if it's in the wrong gun. Know what you're feeding your firearm, and never let familiarity replace verification.
