The 200-Year Shelf Life Myth: How Long Ammo Actually Lasts
Surplus dealers sell 80-year-old WWII ammunition that still fires. Your uncle's hunting ammo from 1998 goes bang every time. So when does ammunition actually go bad — and what kills it?
What Actually Degrades (In Order)
Primers go first. The lead styphnate compound in primers is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air. Moisture degrades the explosive compound, eventually causing misfires or hangfires (delayed ignition). This process takes decades in properly stored ammunition and months in ammunition exposed to standing water or sustained humidity above 70%.
Powder goes second. Smokeless powder is chemically self-decomposing. Over very long time periods (50+ years), nitrocellulose-based propellant produces nitric acid as a byproduct of decomposition. This acid accelerates further decomposition in a feedback loop. Ammunition manufacturers add stabilizer compounds (diphenylamine or ethyl centralite) that absorb the acid, extending usable life — but the stabilizers eventually deplete. When they do, decomposition accelerates. The smell of ether or a reddish-brown dust in the case are late-stage warning signs.
Brass lasts longest. Cartridge brass (70% copper, 30% zinc) is highly corrosion-resistant. Cases show little degradation even after a century of storage in reasonable conditions. Surface tarnish (patina) is cosmetic and does not affect function.
The Enemies
Moisture is the #1 killer. Not humidity alone — humidity combined with temperature cycling. When temperature drops below the dew point, moisture condenses on the case surface and wicks into the primer pocket and case mouth. A single condensation event may not matter. Hundreds of daily temperature cycles over years create cumulative moisture intrusion that degrades primers and powder.
Temperature cycling, not temperature. Ammunition stored in a consistently hot attic (100°F year-round) ages faster but more predictably than ammunition in a garage that swings from 30°F to 100°F with the seasons. The cycling creates condensation, corrosion, and thermal stress on case seals. Consistency matters more than absolute temperature.
Direct water exposure is fatal. Ammunition that's been submerged or stored in standing water should be treated as unreliable regardless of age. Even military ammunition with sealed primers and case mouths (green sealant around the primer) degrades after extended water exposure.

The Carry Ammo Exception
Defensive ammunition that you carry daily is exposed to sweat, body heat, repeated chambering (setback), and pocket lint. Replace your carry ammo every 6–12 months regardless of how it looks. Shoot the old carry ammo at the range — it's still fine for practice. It's a cheap insurance policy against the one malfunction that matters most.
How to Store Bulk Ammo Correctly
Sealed military ammo cans with a rubber gasket are the gold standard. Surplus .50 cal cans ($12–18) hold roughly 1,000 rounds of 9mm or 600 rounds of .223. Add a silica gel desiccant pack (replace annually), close the latch, and store in a closet. This setup keeps ammunition reliable for longer than you'll be alive.
Label every can: caliber, brand, grain weight, date purchased, and lot number. First-in-first-out rotation prevents any single batch from aging too long.
Buy in bulk. Store it right. Shoot it for decades.
